NSW and Victoria have played out another thrilling contest, this time in the under-16 girls’ pool 2 game at Wodonga Leisure Centre yesterday.
With both teams undefeated going into the game, NSW Kookaburras were the team to come out with their perfect tournament record intact, coming back from five points down late in the last quarter to defeat the Bushrangers by a point.
For the Bushrangers pocket rocket Shelby Britten had a great game, bringing her teammates into the contest while lifting the intensity of the Victorians in attack.
But it was a stellar last quarter from the Kookaburras’ Elizabeth Tonks that decided the clash, the cool point guard settling her team into a rhythm after they went to the three-quarter-time break trailing the Bushrangers and looking flustered.
Kookaburras coach Belinda Battistel said Tonks had played well all tournament and was crucial to her side’s comeback.
“Tonks is one of our little point guards who has a possibility of making our state side this year,” Battistel said.
“She really controlled the tempo of the game well for us as did Jasmine Forcadilla.”
Forcadilla was another NSW player to lift in the last quarter with her clutch shooting putting the Kookaburras in front in the dying seconds.
Battistel said NSW would need to keep its focus today if it was to overcome New Zealand Koru.
“The Bushrangers only just beat them by two points and we were lucky to beat (the Bushrangers) today,” she said.
