THE Wodonga Lady Wolves have kept their 2011-12 unbeaten run going, cruising to back-to-back CBL North East Conference grand final berths with a 79-38 win against the Maryborough Lady Blazers at the Wodonga Leisure Centre on Saturday night.
The Wodonga Wolves followed the lead of their female counterparts, also cruising to their second consecutive grand final with a dominant 44-point victory over the Wangaratta Warriors.
After a blistering 24-11 first quarter the Lady Wolves kept their foot to the floor for the remaining three quarters, burying any doubts about their mid-season lack of defence.
“The girls brought their A-game,” coach Mark De Koeyer said.
“Everything fell into place and the girls did all I asked of them.
“We had a great opening five minutes and our pressure all over the court was fantastic all game.”
Stacey De Koeyer top-scored for the Lady Wolves with a game- high 18 points and she was well supported by Holly Bawden (15 points) and Jane Scheetz (13 points).
But in a blow for the grand final favourites Scheetz will be unavailable for next week’s decider putting even more pressure on her already depleted side.
In better news for De Koeyers’ charges, Tenille Collins and Rachel Jeffery got through Saturday night’s game unscathed after taking in niggling injuries.
The Wolves third victory against Wangaratta in as many weeks has extended the career of Beau Sheridan by at least one more game and pleased coach Mich Merrilees no end.
“Beau played out of his skin (on Saturday),” Merrilees said.
“He showed his younger teammates what it takes to win finals.
“He made sure the semi-final wasn’t his last game.”
In next week’s home grand final the Wolves will meet Shepparton Gators who defeated the Seymour Blasters by one point in their semi-final while the Lady Wolves will meet the Echuca Lady Pirates who defeated the Seymour Lady Blasters at the weekend.
