The three-time (Queensland) Golden Gloves winner has flown all the way from his home town of Moranbah, North Queensland, for a five-day training session at Lavington’s Universal Sports Gym with the trainer he rates the best there is in Australia, Mark Janssen.

Oldfield, 21 said he had met Janssen through boxer Waisake Savuro — the cousin of a work colleague back in Queensland.

Oldfield said Janssen had inspired him to take up the sport again. “I stopped boxing for a year or two and concentrated on rugby league and going to the gym,” Oldfield said.

“But Mark has given me that interest back, so much so that I flew from Mackay to Brisbane, Brisbane to Sydney and Sydney to Albury just to train this week,” he said.

“I’ve boxed since I was 10-years-old and Mark’s showed me stuff I’ve never known.

“He points out stuff from old professional fights on the internet so I know what to do right and what I’m doing wrong.

“It’s given me a new perspective on boxing.”

He said the sessions with Janssen’s charges, including Beechworth’s Callen Orchard, would prime for his first professional fight, at Moranbah next month.

Orchard and another Universal fighter, Troy McGrath will fight on the same program.
