Rain ruined match but not self-belief

27 Nov, 2009 11:57 PM
MYRTLEFORD missed the points in last weekend’s Wangaratta and District association clash against Whorouly-Gapsted when the rain cruelly intervened.

But skipper Kane Stevens says the Saints came away with much more — self-belief.

Myrtleford showed it could compete against a respected opponent and Stevens believes his team needs to back up the performance against Rutherglen at the McNamara Reserve today.

“We were pretty filthy getting washed out,” Stevens said.

“But the boys have been bowling beautifully, all year really, and it showed we can win games when we knuckle down a bit.

“We probably need to be more patient with the bat and I think the message is getting through to the boys.

“It’s important we follow it up against Rutherglen.”

Myrtleford&r squo;s Travis Murray, Aaron McIlroy, Ben Paul and Alan Knott have been solid with the ball from the opening round with McIlroy underlining his ability with four of the seven wickets to fall last round.

Brad Piazza’s 93 was the key however and Stevens is looking for more support.

“We probably need to be more patient and hit the bad balls,” he said.

Rutherglen’s Chris Jones is always a formidable opponent and Adrian Grantham and Sam Stewart will ensure the home team is forced to work hard for its elusive victory.

City Colts do battle with Bruck.

In a replay of last year’s grand final, the defending premier Bruck has overcome a lack of cricket to be entrenched on top of the ladder and should be able to take the points through the efforts of top-order batsmen Jeremy Wilson, Vance Curran, Jordan Blades and John Hyde.

Rovers-United take on Yarrawonga Mulwala, Corowa should have too much class for Beechworth and Wangaratta Magpies play host to Greta.

Whorouly-Gapsted has the bye.
