Recognition for natural talent

09 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
AS far as natural talents go, Albury’s Chelsea Nicholas is a pretty exciting prospect.

Nicholas, 15, has been selected in an honorary under-15 Australian girls cricket team despite only recently starting to play regular club cricket.

The Albury High School student moved to the Border from Deniliquin with her family in 2006 and quickly made her mark in Riverina and NSW Breakers junior squads.

Then, after dominating at last year’s national under-15 titles with the ACT, Nicholas was picked in team of the championships, which doubles as the honorary Australian under-15 team.

Her father Dwayne said the talented opening batter hadn’t received a lot of formal coaching.

“Chelsea learned most of her cricket with me and her older brother Joshua, just playing in the backyard,” he said this week.

“She has started playing cricket with Howlong’s under-17 team, her first ever club, and she’s really enjoying it.”

Dwayne said his daughter was determined to go as far as she could in the sport.

“She wants to play for Australia — she met all of the Aussie (women) players at Canberra last year and that’s increased her desire to make it,” he said.
