Local cricketer Sam Hinton is one of the first three girls in history to receive a Basil Sellers Scholarship.
The scholarship is to the value of $4000 and covers her cricket expenses, such as cricket gear, travelling and education.
Miss Hinton was nominated by her two coaches for the scholarship and found out through a letter in the mail.
“It feels good to be one of the first ever females to receive the scholarship. I met Basil Sellers at a function at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and he gave me a handshake,” she said.
The 20-year-old is currently working and will be studying nursing at TAFE in Dubbo next year, and travels to the SCG every Thursday for a three hour training session with the NSW Breakers team.
Since she started cricket on the Western side in primary school, Miss Hinton has had batters running for cover as she delivered her fast-paced bowls.
She has been selected on the under 15s, 17s and 19s, on the NSW State and Combined High Schools teams (CHS) and travelled to India and England.
“It’s a great honour to be sponsored by Basil who is worth over $200 million. I have to travel four hours up and back every week so it’s very helpful,” Miss Hinton said.
