WDCA better side this year: Grant

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
WANGARATTA coach Barry Grant says he is confident his side can survive relegation and be competitive in Division 3 at Melbourne Country Week.

The WDCA yesterday released a final squad of 14 for the five-day tournament, which starts Monday, with Bruck batsman Darren Petersen, Rutherglen all-rounder Nathan Thomas and City Colts batsman Isaac Willett replacing Corowa’s Nathan Rhodes, Rovers United’s Luke O’Keeffe and Bruck’s Jon Hyde.

“We’ve probably got a bit more experience than last year,” Grant said yesterday.

“Petersen has a good record at Country Week so he’s a bonus.

“The players are key players in their club sides so we couldn’t be too much stronger.

“Most of those blokes are handy bats.”

The WDCA, which just escaped relegation last year, will head to Melbourne on Sunday.

Seymour, Colac, Gisborne, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley are also in Division 3.

WDCA squad: Kent Braden (c), Jeremy Wilson, Daniel Vihm, Darren Petersen, Simon Patterson, Zac Guilfoyle, Sam Stewart, Nathan Thomas, Jarred Lane, Lakpriya Perera, Nelum Kumara, Andrew White, Matt Gathercole, Isaac Willett.
