Yackandandah hits 150

05 Feb, 2010 12:00 AM
YACKANDANDAH Cricket Club has claims to be one of the oldest official cricket clubs in Australia, and will celebrate its history in a four-day event next month.

From March 5 to 8, the North East town, nestled in the foothills of Stanley State Forrest, will celebrate its sesqui-centenary, one of the few clubs in Australia able to boast such rich history.

A Cricket Australia media officer said this week he believed Yackandandah was only the second club in Australia to reach the milestone.

“Queenscliff Cricket Club acknowledged their 150-year anniversary last year ... from the information my sources are giving me, that (Yackandandah being the second club to reach 150) would seem correct,” he said.

Yackandandah officials have been busily planning the celebration for months — local historian Colin Barnard has prepared a detailed history of the club, the local museum will display cricket memorabilia, while a Milo cricket match will be held featuring primary school children and involving Cricket Victoria representatives.

Organiser Geoff Manton said the club was proud to reach such a landmark and was planning to celebrate accordingly.

“It’s a really special achievement, to reach 150 years, and a club’s longevity relies on the commitment of its members and the dedication of its officials,” he said.

“To mark this auspicious achievement, the club will be holding a number of activities and we extend a warm welcome to all past and present players, officials, partners and supporters to help us celebrate the occasion.”

Other highlights set to feature will be a function on the Saturday night, with colourful commentator Kerry O’Keeffe as guest speaker, while a section of the town will be cordoned off for a street party on the Friday night.

Manton said the club was expecting a turnout of 400 guests to the function on Saturday night, which costs $50, while he was also excited about the museum display, which features items dating back to the initial formation of the club.

All inquiries about the celebrations should be made through the Yackandandah visitor information centre at uniqueyackandandah.com.au or (02) 6027 1988.
