Club gearing up for carnival

02 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
TRACK cycling under lights will set the scene for the first Albury-Wodonga track event at Lavington Velodrome tomorrow.

Starting at 7pm, the interclub event is set to attract as many as 70 competitors across five age divisions with many cyclists using the night as a lead-up to Wagga’s $10,000 Golden Wheel carnival next weekend.

Albury-Wodonga Cycling Club’s junior development officer Brendan Washington said he was expecting the event to be fiercely contested as cyclists prepared for the Golden Wheel carnival.

“It should be a good event,” he said.

“There’ll be a lot of junior cyclists competing from Lavington, Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta and Wagga ... and in terms of their potential and the work they put in they’re quite underrated.

“Some of these guys have had third, fourth and fifth placed finishes at state level and don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

Washington said a large portion of the competitors would travel to Wagga next weekend despite the Golden Wheel carnival being held on a flat track.

“A lot of guys will be using Friday night to gear up for Wagga,” he said.

“I think (the Golden Wheel carnival) is nearly on par with Wangaratta’s cycling events now in terms of the prizemoney on offer.

“It normally attracts good riders from all over the state.”
