ALBURY completed an important step towards bolting down a top-spot finish this season by downing arch-rival Wodonga at the Albury Sportsground on Saturday.

In a match worthy of a September showdown, the Tigers clawed their way to a seven-point win after being headed by the Bulldogs early in the final term.

The Tigers remain undefeated after 12 rounds and victory over second-placed Yarrawonga in round 16 will guarantee them the minor premiership.

Albury has made a predictable surge up the ladder this season, but the Bulldogs showed on Saturday they are also a genuine flag contender.

Tigers’ coach Paul Spargo praised his players for claiming victory in another tightly contested encounter after coming from behind to beat reigning premier Wangaratta last round by five points.

“I thought the boys dug deep when they had to,” Spargo, pictured left, said.
