YARRAWONGA recruit Brendan Fevola hasn’t ruled out playing more than nine home matches and finals with the Ovens and Murray heavyweight this season.
Although Fevola will meet with Pigeon co-coaches Chris Kennedy and Drew Barnes in Melbourne tomorrow to thrash out a rough playing schedule, the former Carlton and Brisbane Lions player said he would play as many matches as possible.
“With our home games it works out well for the club because if lots of people turn up they will make a fair bit of cash,” Fevola said.
“Knowing my competitive nature, once I start to play I will probably play some away games as well I would have thought.”
Fevola said Yarrawonga approached him late last month after he made the decision to stay in Australia this year and not try out as an NFL punter in the US.
A call from Pigeon and former AFL star Joel Smith convinced him the J.C. Lowe Oval-based club was the right one.
“Joel said it’s a good club and said he would play again if I signed up,” he said.
Fevola also spoke to former Yarrawonga champion Craig Ednie, who recently crossed to Mulwala after a decorated career with the Pigeons.
Fevola, who kicked 69 goals for VFL club Casey Scorpions last year after being dumped by the Lions after a series of off-field misdemeanours, should be cherry-ripe for a big season.
He trained until December in a bid to join an AFL club and will line up for Waratahs in Sunday’s Northern Territory Football League clash against Southern Districts.
Fevola last played for Waratahs in round 9 when he kicked 11 goals against the Tiwi Bombers.
“It’s a big game for the club so I thought I would go back and see if I could help them out,” he said.
The dual Coleman medallist also expects to play at least one charity match during the season.
