Investment in youth paying off for Spiders

27 Nov, 2009 10:56 PM
HOWLONG coach Troy McCormack believes the Spiders are slowly reaping the rewards of investing in their youth and is hoping his side can cash in against Kiewa today.

Last year’s wooden spooners have enjoyed a mixed season so far, smashing Baranduda in round 1, suffering an outright defeat to New City in round 2 before playing out a draw against Wodonga Raiders.

But the Spiders may consider themselves unfortunate that rain intervened last week, after reducing the Raiders to 3-16 chasing 157.

McCormack said yesterday he was confident the club was heading in the right direction after a few lean summers.

“We’ve really invested in our young players and now they are all coming through,” he said.

“We haven’t recruited any players since I’ve been at the club, we just want to look after our own future.

“We’ve got a new skipper in Luke Daly who has done a sensational job and we’ve got some really promising kids coming through from B-grade.”

McCormack said the side was happy with its start to the season, but added it could’ve been even better.

“We’ve been pretty steady so far, although we had a really bad game against New City,” he said.

“Unfortunately the second week of the match against the Raiders was called off when we were in a pretty strong position.

“To have them 3-16 chasing 157 had them on the ropes — and we really wanted to finish that game off.”

While Kiewa is yet to taste victory this season, McCormack said the Spiders wouldn’t take their opponents lightly.

“Kiewa are always really competitive, they’ve had a few solid wins against us over the years so it will be a good challenge,” he said.

In other matches, Bethanga hosts Barnawartha-Chiltern, Wodonga Raiders face Mount Beauty and ladder-leaders New City travel to Baranduda.
