League clash under threat

27 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
HUME and Tallangatta and District may be forced to abandon their popular interleague clash after only one year.

League officials have been unable to secure a ground with lights for the Friday, June 11, match with Hume president Merv Wegener saying yesterday time was running out.

Lavington and Albury have rejected approaches in fear of their grounds being “chopped up” for home matches the following day.

Wodonga and Wodonga Raiders also play at home that weekend.

Wegener said it would be a huge disappointment if the leagues had to cancel the tussle.

“At this stage it’s not looking good,” Wegener said.

“Last year was a fantastic promotion for country football and it would be a real shame if we had to call it off.

“Hopefully we can work something out because this is a great opportunity for district players and followers to witness good football.”

It is believed the TDFL in particular is reluctant to play the match on the Saturday night in fear of players wanting the weekend off.

More than 1200 spectators turned out for last year’s clash at LPO with the Panthers having an away match that weekend.

Hume officials were keen on playing an inter-league match against the TDFL as a curtain-raiser to the Ovens and Murray’s clash with Goulburn Valley on May 22.

The proposal fell over due to TDFL scheduling problems.

Hume and the TDFL played junior and senior football matches last year as well as netball.
