Mackie shines in grand final

22 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
JINDERA captain Joel Mackie claimed career best first grade figures to lead the Bulldogs to a thrilling three-run victory against Rand in the Brocklesby and District Cricket Association grand final at Jindera yesterday.

With the minor premier defending a modest 156 runs, Mackie once again showed his ability to rise to the occasion on the sporting arena by taking a match-winning 6-47 off 19 overs.

He also effected a run out.

Rand resumed at 2-4 overnight and, with leading BDCA batsman James Kreutzberger at the crease, always looked a chance of reeling in the target.

But his dismissal for 49 rocked the Pigeons and left Ryan Kirkwood and Adrian Everitt to carry the responsibility down the order.

The pair hit out superbly with 38 needed off the final five overs and it took some Mackie magic in the dying overs to win Jindera its first premiership since 2005-06 when Luke Styles was at the helm.

Mackie said it was a huge thrill to go through the season undefeated.

“It was an absolute heart-stopper,” he said.

“We were in trouble a few times and just managed to get out of it.

“Rand batted well towards the end and it was a great game of cricket.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys.”

Styles topscored with 51 on day one in a crucial knock against some impressive bowling from Will Swift and Hayden Mathews who took four wickets each.

Rand lost few admirers for its performance with Kreutzberger praising the side’s youngsters.

“It’s heart-breaking to go so close,” Kreutzberger said.

“We have lost a couple of grand finals by under 10 runs now.

“The boys didn’t give up though and we had three kids under-16 out there today who will be fantastic for the club in years to come.”

In division two, Burrumbuttock defeated Balldale in another thriller.
