Reid’s upside is sure to get him onside with clubs

UPSIDE is one of those new-age terms that is hard to define.

At this time of year, when the AFL world awaits its next wave of talent, it’s a word splashed across newspapers and websites, and heard regularly when people are discussing all things footy.

But what exactly does it mean?

Generically, it can be defined as something, or someone, that has a massive potential to improve.

Sam Reid has upside.

Despite not really dominating many games at junior levels, the Murray Bushrangers key position prospect is still considered a genuine chance to get snaffled early in tonight’s national draft.

Why? That word again — upside.

Still 17, Reid is a 192cm, 84kg athlete capable of running like the wind and leaping buildings in a single bound.

AFL talent guru Kevin Sheehan believes it’s the type of package that has AFL clubs drooling.

“Sam is still developing as a footballer but he is a great size and a terrific athlete,” Sheehan said.

“He is still getting his game together. He hasn’t dominated at under-18 level yet ... but he was so prominent at draft camp — he starred at that — so all clubs will closely consider him.

“His upside, his frame, his capacity athletically, his size and his speed/endurance combination is what clubs are after.”

Bushrangers region manager Andrew Carson says Reid’s incredible athleticism was obvious at the Bushies but a handful of significant moments last season made him realise there was more to Reid’s game than his physical gifts.

“His athletic ability is obviously a huge advantage for him,” Carson said.

“That’s always been his strength, but this year he was a really solid contributor (and) he had a couple of games where he really stood-out.

“In round 2 against Dandenong, we moved him to the ruck in the last quarter and he instigated a brilliant comeback for us, even though we fell a couple of points short.

“He had another great game at Wangaratta late in the season where he took four or five really strong contested marks, which shows his ability as an agile, key position player.”

Reid comes from a famous football family — his father, Bruce, played more than 100 VFL games with Footscray and Carlton while his brother, Ben, is a current Collingwood player.

Reid, a quiet, unassuming young man, possesses a steely resolve to improve as a footballer and become the third of his family to make it to the top level.

As a footballer, he believes he still has a lot to learn.

“I don’t think I really have a set position as of yet, I’m still learning a lot,” he said.

“I really need to work on my consistency; using my strengths and being consistent week after week.”

At draft camp, Reid spoke to Carlton, Adelaide, St Kilda, Sydney, North Melbourne and Fremantle — an experience he said was “extremely mentally draining” — and has been training with the Bushrangers and Wangaratta Rovers in the lead-up to the draft.

He said he’d love to join his brother at Collingwood but would be happy to play anywhere.

“There’s no guarantees in the draft, I’d go anywhere as long as I got a chance,” he said.

“I’d prefer to stay in Victoria but it wouldn’t worry me at all going interstate.”

Sheehan is firm in his belief Reid won’t be left disappointed tonight.

While he didn’t rate him in his top 30 prospects earlier this month, he is confident Reid’s draft ambitions will be fulfilled.

“His football is still developing but he already has the athletic ability to be an AFL player,” Sheehan said.

“I couldn’t hazard a guess where he might be picked ... after about the top 30 it’s just as open as anything but I have a feeling his name will be read out on Thursday.”
