FOOTBALL can often be a simple game and Wangaratta Rovers coach Matt Allen has a simple answer when asked how the Hawks can improve — “we need to kick more goals.”
Allen yesterday highlighted scoring power as his team’s major concern heading into today’s clash with Lavington at W.J. Findlay Oval.
“Our forward line set-up is something we need to improve,” he said.
“Our midfield is performing well and our backline has been solid but we definitely need to put some scores on the board,” he said.
“Karl Norman and Jake Platfuss have kicked a few goals for us this year but we need to get them both firing at once.
“We also need to give them a bit more support — we can’t just rely on those two so that’s something we’re working on.”
Aside from winless Myrtle-ford, Rovers have scored the fewest points in the O and M this year, supporting Allen’s argument.
The Hawks, who last week went down to North Albury by 11 points, are ninth on the ladder with two wins, with the Panthers sitting seventh with three victories.
“We were a bit disappointing last week — we played OK but couldn’t get over the line,” Allen said.
“We’re pleased with the way we’ve been playing but we’re still not doing what we want to do all the time.”
Allen said both teams weren’t exactly flying.
“Lavington are a bit like us at the moment — we’re both struggling with injuries,” he said.
“Raiders were obviously really good against them last week and we’re hopeful we can get a win against them as well.
“Their midfield is the key — they’ve got a lot of good players and we need to break even if we’re to get up.
“That’s our main focus.”
While defender Tyson Hartwig will make a welcome return for today’s contest, Kyle Raven and Caolan Buckley will spend at least one more week on the sidelines.
“They might be a week or two away — but it would be nice when we get them back,” Allen said.
