 ‘Small’ forward big worry: Hart

‘Small’ forward big worry: Hart

23 Jul, 2009 12:00 AM
OSBORNE coach Graham Hart is concerned his defence could be too top-heavy for Lockhart’s mobile forward line.

Gun full-forward Daniel Smallwood is Lockhart’s leading goalscorer with 56 for the season while coach Nathan McPherson is second with just 15 goals from 12 matches.

But Hart yesterday dismissed claims the Demons relied too heavily on too few, insisting Lockhart’s even spread of contributors could prove to be Osborne’s undoing.

“I guess Daniel Smallwood is the only bloke that’s been kicking regular bags for them,” Hart said.

“But by the same token they’ve got a lot of mobile, hard-running blokes through there that can bob up for one or two (goals).

“In that regard we could be a bit top-heavy because we’ve got a lot of taller blokes back there.

“It could go either way. If they bomb away I guess it plays into our hands a bit, but if they don’t then we could be found out.”

At the other end of the ground, Hart has little to worry about in attack.

The Cats have averaged more than 20 goals and a winning margin of just over 89 points since their round 5 loss to Culcairn.

Hart (63 goals) is second in the competition’s goalkicking and half-forward Jamie Parr has kicked 24.

Brendon McKelvie has kicked 22 goals from just five games while Adam Gooden, Djali Bloomfield and Michael Gleeson have all kicked a bag of five or more at least once this season.

McKelvie and Parr, rested in last week’s 161-point win over the Murray Magpies, will return this week along with the tough midfielder Damien Flanigan.

Elsewhere, Culcairn’s Derek Murray (hamstring) and Craig Bosley (unavailable) are likely to miss the Lions’ clash with Walla.

Midfielder Leigh Baker (work) and Jeremy Grove are expected to return for Culcairn.

Henty stands a strong chance of accounting for Coleambally if the Swampies can carry on the form that saw them fall just 31 points shy of Jindera last week.

Brocklesby-Burrumbuttock could move into eighth spot if the Saints comprehensively account for Billabong Crows.

Howlong and Rand-Walbundrie should continue on their merry way to finals by defeating Murray Magpies and CDHBU respectively.
