A BLINDING start ensured Whorouly gave Bonnie Doon a harsh reminder where it sits in the Ovens and King pecking order on Saturday.
The Lions put the game to bed in the first quarter, booting seven goals on their way to a 36-point win.
Bonnie Doon went into the clash confident of achieving an upset win after winning four of their last five matches and coming within three points of shocking Tarrawingee, but their hopes were dashed in the first term.
The Dogs were equal with Whorouly for the rest of the day but the damage had already been done.
Lions coach Scott McMasters admitted he was nervous about heading to Bonnie Doon.
“That was always going to be tough and dangerous game for us,” McMasters said.
“Moyhu had lost down there, they had pushed Tarrawingee and they seemed pretty confident they could beat us, and rightly so because they’ve been playing some really good football.
“Taking all that into account, the long road trip and the fact that they don’t have the best facilities down there, it was a great effort from the boys to start the way they did.”
Elsewhere, Milawa flogged Goorambat and proved it has yet another potentially match-winning forward in its midst.
The Demons kept their visitors goalless on their way to a 221-point victory.
Milawa rested key forwards Mick Newton and Brent Newton but 2010 recruit Daniel Lewis stepped up in their absence, booting 14 goals to help the Demons to their 32.30 (222) scoreline.
The battle for top-four spots didn’t change this week with all five teams enjoying big wins.
Moyhu tested Tarrawingee in the early parts of their clash but the Hoppers only scored three behinds in the second and third quarters as the Bulldogs cruised away to an 86-point victory.
Glenrowan’s top-eight chances nosedived after its 30-point loss to Greta.
Riley O’Shea kicked seven goals as Bright belted North Wangaratta by 146 points.
Benalla All Blacks had eight multiple goal scorers as it overcame Tatong by 118 points.
