MYRTLEFORD has suffered a major blow with striker James McKillop leaving the Albury-Wodonga Football Association club for Melbourne.
McKillop, who joined the Savoys at the start of last season after crossing from AWFA rival Albury City, scored 13 goals in 2011 and 15 for City in 2010.
The nippy forward said work in Melbourne had prompted the move.
“I will be moving shortly as I am pursuing my professional work career in Melbourne and my football,” McKillop said.
“I will be playing soccer in Melbourne and I am looking forward to improving my game.
“Myrtleford will always be here for me and maybe in the future I would look at settling back there.”
McKillop’s loss is a blow for playing coach Michael Sacco, who is one of two confirmed new faces along with talented winger Matt Vaccaro, who will travel from Melbourne.
McKillop formed a potent partnership with Yusef Tekesic last season, both joining the club on the eve of its round 3 game away to Wangaratta.
McKillop, who has also had stints at Boomers FC and Albury Hotspurs, said he would leave with a heavy heart.
“I must say it was the highlight of my career playing under such excellent coaches,” he said.
“Myrtleford has been the most welcoming and family-oriented club that I have played for so far.”
The Savoys, who have been training in Wangaratta due to the redevelopment at Savoy Park, have organised practice games against Cobram Victory, Tatura and Essendon United.
