WANGARATTA is desperate to play finals but the Devils will turn their attention to other matters when they meet league leader Twin City Wanderers at Kelly Park tomorrow.
The Devils firmed as finals potential when they beat St Patrick’s last week, moving within two points of the eight.
Wangaratta coach Jack Molinaro this week confirmed the club was ready to snap its long finals absence.
“We want to play finals, that’s our aim at this stage,” he said.
“As far as I see it, we need to win three out of our next five matches to play finals and I’m pretty confident we can achieve that.”
After Twin City, Wangaratta’s home run consists of clashes against Wodonga Diamonds (home), Albury Hotspurs (home), Albury City (away) and Wodonga Panthers (home).
But despite the finals focus, Molinaro said Twin City’s brilliant form meant the Devils would forget about the future and use tomorrow’s clash to test their development and gain some big-match experience to aid them in the run home.
“This week isn’t crucial to our finals chances, it’s just a good chance to see how far we’ve come,” he said.
“Sure, I’d love to come out and beat Twin City but I believe they’re the best team in the competition.
“They’ re so quick and skilled and they won’t let up now they’ve got United chasing them.
“We’re still a young, developing team — we’re all about improvement — and the best way to improve is to compare yourself to the best, so we’re really looking forward to it.”
St Patrick’s faces a much more difficult run with matches against Wodonga Diamonds (away), Albury City (home), Albury United (home) and Boomers FC (away), but has the benefit of a bye.
Albury Hotspurs, on the same points as St Pat’s but with a better goal difference, have this week’s bye followed by Myrtleford (home), Wangaratta (away), Wodonga Panthers (home) and Albury United (away).
