WODONGA Diamonds will face a difficult time defending their AWFA cup title, with stars Jarrod Herzina and Jedd Gvozdenovic among several departures from the club.
Herzina, who was named man of the match in September’s 3-2 golden goal cup final win against Albury United at Jelbart Park, appears likely to play in Geelong, while Gvozdenovic is off to Canberra.
The pair join the likes of Steve Colombera, Steve Brunec, Ben de Kruiff, Ian Roberts, Tim Rickman, Damon Ferguson and Will Brown who are either leaving or have retired.
“It doesn’t matter who we get we won’t be able to replace them,” coach and club president Paul Millynn said.
“We will probably lose eight in all, seven from the grand final side.
“Jarrod has already gone to Geelong and Jedd’s moving to Canberra.
“Ben has gone to Perth, Ian Roberts has gone to Newcastle, Steve Brunec and Damon Ferguson have retired, Steve Colombera, Will Brown and Tim Rickman are going to Melbourne.”
Despite the departures, the Diamonds started preseason training well before Christmas and are determined to remain competitive.
Fitness guru Josh Dickinson, from Physique Essentials in Wodonga, has come on board as a sponsor and will help train the senior men’s team and senior women’s team once a week until the season.
“He’s basically going to be our own personal trainer,” Millynn said.
“He’ll be a great benefit.”
Meanwhile, soccer star and emerging boxer Mat Hasler faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after seriously injuring his leg roller-blading.
He has had surgery to insert screws into his fibula and tibia after badly twisting his leg in a roller-blading accident in Wodonga on Monday.
Twin City striker Hasler, who played for the Albury-Wodonga Football Association in last year’s friendly against Melbourne Heart, will have the screws taken out in three months but then faces a long rehab.
