WODONGA Diamonds continue to be a thorn in the side of Twin City after again forcing a draw with the Wanderers.
It took a headed goal from Wanderers utility Jason Gilbert with about 10 minutes to go to give last year’s league and cup winner a share of the points at Kelly Park yesterday.
The teams played out a 2-2 draw at La Trobe University in round 7.
Diamonds led 1-0 at half-time after an early goal to speedy striker Adam Waters before Twin City hit back through midfielder Kyle Maynard on the hour mark.
Diamonds again took the lead through Waters five minutes later before Gilbert saved the day for the Wanderers in the 80th minute.
Diamonds coach Paul Millynn said he felt the result was a fair one.
“We found ourselves up twice and conceded twice,” Millynn said.
“We conceded a goal from a free kick and the other from a corner.
“They had a lot of possession, probably about 60 per cent, and we just couldn’t find the net. ”
The result left Wanderers fourth, two points above fifth-placed Myrtleford, and Diamonds seventh, five points clear of eighth-placed Wangaratta.
“It was disappointing but at the end of the day we didn’t expect to win,” Millynn said.
“Our target is still sixth and we are still on track.”
Elsewhere, Albury City defeated Wangaratta 4-3 at home, while Myrtleford and Boomers FC and Wodonga Panthers and Melrose FC will have to replay their games after they were cancelled at Savoy Park and Willow Park, respectively, because of unplayable pitches.
