Border juniors shining on the national stage

20 Oct, 2009 01:00 AM
ALBURY-Wodonga Table Tennis Club’s juniors continue to make their mark on the national stage.

Catholic College Wodonga’s Jarryd Tormey, 14, and Albury High School’s Andrew Brooker recently returned from representing Victoria at the Australian Junior Table Tennis Championships.

Tormey returned with a bronze medal after his under-15 Victorian side finished third while Brooker, playing in the combined Table Tennis Australia’s president side, was in good form as his team finished sixth.

Both youngsters then progressed to the final 16 of the under-15 singles before getting knocked out in the quarter-finals.

Tormey then went one better in New Zealand last week when he combined with two Melbourne players to win silver in the under-15 NZ Open.

Meanwhile, Jarryd’s sister, Sarah, 16, and Henry McKenzie-McHarg, 12, travelled to Melbourne last weekend for the annual Junior Encouragement tournament.

The invitational event excludes the state’s top-ranked juniors and gives up and coming talent a chance

Albury-Wodonga Table Tennis president Gary Brooker said the success of the juniors was having an impact on the rest of the club.

“At a local level, it’s got to the stage now where the juniors are setting the pace in our domestic competitions,” Brooker said.

“They’re raising the bar higher and higher and the senior players are having to lift their game.”
