Demons calling on inner strength

03 Feb, 2007 08:00 AM
SPRING-heeled Melbourne forward Russell Robertson is hoping a revamped pre-season under fitness guru Bohdan Babijczuk will see the club soar up the AFL ladder this season.

After falling away badly towards the end of last year’s home and away series, Robertson said the former Hawthorn physical preparation manager had focused more on sprint work and strength since joining the club.

“It’s more subtle changes than anything, but it’s definitely more sprint-oriented and I have noticed a lot of the boys are looking stronger,” Robertson said yesterday.

“Bohdan&rs quo;s pretty big on that.

“Last year we started to struggle after 16 rounds and this year we want to be firing 22 rounds and beyond.

“He had a lot to do with getting Shane Crawford and Joel Smith up a few years back and it’s good to have him on board.”

Melbourne&rsq uo;s supporters will be able to take a closer look at the players during the Demons’ three-day AFL Community Camp at Wangaratta, starting on Tuesday.

The camp is part of a national program where 16 AFL clubs visit regional and remote communities across Australia, giving locals an opportunity to take a closer look at football at the highest level.

Robertson said Melbourne’s supporter base was growing in regional Victoria and NSW.

“We have been to Albury and Shepparton over the past two years and it’s been fantastic to get out and mix with the country people,” he said.

“I’m from Tassie, but a lot of the other boys like Adem Yze are from places like Shepparton.

“It&rsquo ;s a good change.”

Promising youngsters Colin Sylvia (shoulder) and Clint Bartram (ankle) are the only major injury concerns for Melbourne, with both being nursed through pre-season training after operations.

The Demons will be welcomed with a civic reception at the Rural City of Wangaratta offices from 12.30pm, with a gym and pool session following at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre from 2pm to 4pm.

- Adem Yze will write a daily diary for The Border Mail during Melbourne’s stay in Wangaratta.
