CORIO sprinter Peter Walsh defied a nagging hamstring injury to land one of the biggest wins of his career in the Burramine Gift at the J.C. Lowe Oval on Saturday.
Walsh, who was running off 8m, pocketed the $4800 winner’s cheque by winning in a time of 12.44 seconds from Cam Dunbar and stablemate Matt Hargreaves.
The victory continued an outstanding run of form for Walsh who was also successful in the Latrobe Gift this season.
“I was fairly tentative going in as I only hurt my hamstring 10 days ago, but I stayed in one piece and it’s fantastic to win at Burramine,” Walsh said.
“I was a bit tentative all day and just wanted to get through without breaking down.
“Everything came together well.
“It’s a great feeling and definitely one of my biggest wins.”
Walsh won his heat in the third-fastest time of 12.64 seconds and finished second to even money Gift favourite Craig Brown from Tullamarine in the semi-final.
He and Hargreaves are trained by John Henry.
“I have probably ran at Burramine six or seven times over the years and came third back in 2000,” he said.
“I had a good season that year and this one is going fairly well too.
“It’s always a good carnival here.”
Of the Border contingent, Albury’s John Adams failed to advance beyond the heats when he was run out by Dunbar and Matthew Pilkington.
Wangaratta’s Greg O’Keefe won heat three in 12.82 seconds, but was beaten in the semis by Brown and Walsh.
Daniel Steinhauer was a late entry after running in the Australian championships in Queensland and won his heat, but came up short in the semi-finals.
Albury veteran Adrian Fury was triumphant in the 70m open.
Running off 11.5m, he won in 7.60 seconds to write another chapter into his successful athletics career.
