 Irish ain’t Irish

Irish ain’t Irish

19 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
WE’RE not sure whether someone had too many green beers celebrating St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday, but Backchat received an anonymous tip during the week suggesting Corowa-Rutherglen may have snared an Irish recruit.

The email hinted that one of the Roos’ new faces from Old Brighton, Patrick Phelan, could actually be a footballer of the Gaelic variety, thanks to his new nickname.

The email said Phelan had apparently been given the moniker “Irish” by his Corowa-Rutherglen teammates.

“I know the three recruits that Corowa have picked up (and they are) all quality young men and very good footballers,” the email said.

“But The Border Mail has turned one of them into an Irishman — “Paddy” Phelan’s christian name is Patrick, not Paddy.

“I caught up with them on Saturday and (fellow recruits) Mark Ainley and Matt Gadsden have now nicknamed Patrick “Irish.”
