CHAMPION jockey and Albury Gold Cup ambassador Michael Rodd was a terrific speaker at last week’s carnival launch and hopefully he comes back for the big day.
Not only would his presence be a massive boost to the carnival but Backchat also has a bone to pick with the 2007 Melbourne Cup winner.
During his Border visit Rodd, who was humorously nicknamed Autumn Leaves as a young jockey because “I kept falling off”, gave us some punting advice for last weekend’s Australian Cup race day at Flemington.
“Denman has a mortgage on the Australian Guineas,” Rodd told.
“I don’t see how my horse (Rock Classic) or any others can beat him.”
Denman was a $1.60 favourite so Backchat decided to really load up to make a healthy profit.
You can imagine our disgust then when the Bart Cummings-trained Rock Classic stormed to victory paying a very healthy $18, with Denman fading to fourth.
Thanks, Michael.
