WINGHAM’S Stephanie Maiolo will jet to Tasmania in October as a member of the NSW touch football team to play in the Australian Primary Schools Championship.
Stephanie, 11, was named following the State titles held at Tuncurry where she was a member of the Hunter side. She is also the Manning River Times-Iguana Sportstar of the Week, winning a $50 open order at Iguana.
Hunter went through the championships unbeaten and was declared joint champions after drawing 2-2 with Sydney West in the final. No extra time was played.
Stephanie was co-captain of the Hunter side, where she played as a middle. She was happy with her form in the championship.
At this stage she hasn’t been told what position she’ll fill in Tasmania. The squad will meet for a three-day training camp in Sydney before flying out and she expects to find out then.
This is the second year that Stephanie has represented Hunter.
She started playing touch two years ago after encouragement from a teacher at Wingham Brush, Liz Newman.
Stephanie plays in junior competitions at Taree and Wingham while she was a member of the Taree under 12 side that made the quarter final of the State Junior Cup in Wollongong earlier this year.
She mixes touch and soccer and represented Hunter in the State PSSA soccer championship this year, where the team was runner up.
“I’ve been playing soccer longer, but I like them both the same,’’ Stephanie replied when asked if she had a favourite sport.
