 The game that nearly wasn't

The game that nearly wasn't

25/09/2008 10:35:00 AM
Last Saturday Scone Mustangs played Thornton Park Seniors for the bragging rights for 2008. The game was played in hot and very windy conditions at Weston.

The victory had great significance as The Scone Mustangs 10 days ago were one of the 135 teams affected by the original decision not to play the final due to wet weather. This meant the first 2 teams on the ladder would play the grand final even though they completed the semi finals.

The team almost missed out on the chance to play in the grand final due to an appaling decision made by the Hunter Valley/Lake Macquarie/Newcastle Association. The Northern NSW Soccer overturned the original decision due to the public outcry that effected over 2000 players who had tasted victory in the minor semi final the week before.

Early in the first half Scone had some concerted attacks on Thornton’s goal and within five minutes Josh Gilmore put one in the back of the net off a short pass from Lachlan Eccles, placing the opposition on the back foot. The game went from one end of the park to the other using great attack and defence skills from both sides, Thornton Park almost scoring twice with the ball bouncing off the post both times, the score staying level. The Scone goalie, Isaac Belfield had to save an onslaught of kicks straight at him. Very late in the first half Thornton Park scored to level scores 1-1.

The second half saw both sides come back on with conviction, Scone attacking with all their might, only to be shut down from some great defence. Making some long concerted runs down the sideline and crossing the ball only to again by thwarted by Thornton. On one occasion, the ball was crossed to find a Thornton player slam the ball into the back of the net for an own goal. (You don’t like to see this happen but it does at all levels, including World Cup). Devastated Thornton retaliated with a barrage of attacks on our goal to be awarded a corner.

The kick saw the ball cross high across the face of the net and during the ensuing scramble for the ball saw a Thornton player kick the ball behind our defence and into the back of the net, levelling the game at 2-2 at full time.

Extra time, 15 minutes each way. The game really fired up with both teams just missing the mark on a number of occasions. With the stifling heat and wind, the match was taking its toll on both teams, with players out on their feet at the end of extra time. Now the dreaded penalty shootout.

Isaac Belfield the Scone goal keeper made the telling save in the shoot out that gave Scone the edge. The boy’s backed up Isaac when Josh Gilmore, Jake Readie, Lachlan Eccles, Tom Guihot and Simon Gilmore all converted the penalties. Scone victory 5 penalties to 4 significant win against a first division club.

It was real team effort and it is hard to single out individuals in a champion team. Particular praise should go to Andrew Dick the coach who was married the week before who over the years have coached these guys without having any son or connections with the players.

He was able assistant Lenny Gilmore should be noted for his work during the year.

It is hard to say where this team will go to from here. It becomes difficult to predict the future there are a number of quality players that have a bright future in the sport. Once again Scone has showed we are as good as anyone else in Soccer.

The boys played their hearts out for a fantastic result.

A fitting although belated wedding gift to coach.
