ROOKIE prop Antonio Kaufusi plans a smashing Test debut against Great Britain on Saturday to convince Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart to keep him for the Tri Nations final.
The Melbourne forward declared himself over the hamstring injury which delayed his debut a fortnight ago and ready to make a big impression on the tourists and Stuart.
Kaufusi was named on the Australian bench, replacing Brisbane’s Origin prop Sam Thaiday who is hoping he has done enough in his two games in the series to have Stuart’s support for Saturday week’s final in Sydney.
Kaufusi looked to be struggling at training earlier this week but believes the adrenalin from playing for his country for the first time will get him through.
“I’m just stoked being in the squad and to get a shot this week is great,” said the power running prop, described early in his career by former Melbourne captain Rodney Howe as having more “natural attributes” than any forward he’d ever laid eyes on.
“Come Saturday, I’ll be ready.”
Kaufusi&rsquo ;s explosiveness and raw power is what Stuart will need if the Kangaroos are to bundle Great Britain out of the series in Brisbane and come up against the intimidating and in-form Kiwis in the final.
“If you make an impression on the coach in this game, you have to be a big chance of being picked for the next,” he said.
Kaufusi turned down a chance to play for Tonga against Great Britain to remain eligible to represent Australia.
Meanwhile, Bulldogs captain Andrew Ryan said he would do his best to take advantage of his recall for suspended team-mate Willie Mason.
“You never know what’s going to happen if the side goes out and plays really well,” Ryan said.
“I guess it’s unfortunate for Willie but lucky for me for him to be out this week and for me to be in the starting side.”
Ryan said it was important for the Kangaroos to improve on their performance in the 23-12 loss to Great Britain.
