BORDER star Lindsey Wright has continued her outstanding form after finishing tied for third at the NSW Women’s Open at Oatlands Golf Club yesterday.
The former Thurgoona player, who finished sixth at the Royal Canberra Ladies Classic last week, shot a final-round two-under 70 for a tournament total of nine-under 207.
Wright finished five shots behind Lydia Ko, 14, with the amateur shooting a bogey-free round of three-under 69 to become the youngest winner of a professional golf tournament, man or women.
Becky Morgan, of Wales, shot a final-round six-under 66 to finish second, four shots behind Ko, while Wright and Kristie Smith tied for third.
Wright said New Zealand teenager Ko deserved her victory.
“Of course it’s disappointing not to win but to witness Lydia become the youngest player to win a tournament ... it’s bloody crazy,” Wright said last night.
“When I was 14 I was thinking about Boyzone and my homework but she looks like a seasoned professional.
“She played well and she deserved it.
“The way she maintained her composure was pretty impressive.”
Wright started the third and final round four shots behind Ko and then got to within three shots with a birdie at the par-three second (166m).
Wright, who shot five final-round birdies, got to within two shots with birdies at the par-five sixth and par-four seventh but that’s as close as she got, with bogeys at the 16th and 17th wrecking her chances of a top-two finish.
Wright will now turn her attention to this week’s Australian Ladies Masters at Royal Pines, knowing a similar performance could put her within reach of the title.
“I hit the ball so well,” the 32-year-old said.
“It’s just followed on from last week.
“I feel excited to start the season like this.”
