 Cup attracts strong showing

Cup attracts strong showing

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
ALBURY Harness Racing Club has attracted a strong field for the $12,000 Albury Pacers Cup (2570m) at Albury Paceway on Saturday night.

Talented Victorian raiders Smudge Bromac, Karlsruhe and Ti Vogliobene look set to battle out favouritism with gifted NSW pacer Holy Camp Boy in the richest harness race on the Border.

Trained at Avenel by Greg Norman, Ti Vogliobene drops sharply in grade after finishing fourth behind the Lance Justice-trained superstar Smoken Up at his past two starts.

Ti Vogliobene finished a credible fourth behind Smoken Up in the $100,000 South Australian Cup two starts back before finishing unplaced in another strong affair on the bumper Hunter Cup program at Melton on Saturday night.

In a further boost to Ti Vogliobene’s credentials, harness racing’s hottest driving commodity Greg Sugars is set to take the reins in a huge coup for the club.

Sugars partnered Australia’s best pacer Smoken Up to his recent SA Cup success and is also the regular driver of pacing sensation and heir apparent Sushi Sushi.

The David Aiken-trained and driven Smudge Bromac and Mitchell Reese-trained Holy Camp Boy will also attract support from punters.

Smudge Bromac finished unplaced behind Smoken Up on Saturday night while Holy Camp Boy has been racing consistently in much tougher company including a third placing in the group 3 Newcastle Cup behind Mach Wiper three starts back.

The Geoff Martin-trained and driven Karlsruhe resumes from a spell and looms as the X-factor despite not having won a race for more than 18 months.

The $8000 String Of Pearls is the other feature on an outstanding program after the club had to scrap the $8000 Jack Adams Memorial 2YO Pace and $8000 Border Derby due to lack of nominations.

It is free admission for Commercial Club members.

The first race of the eight-race program is at 6.58pm.
