McBride feature boosts opener

07 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
THE wait is finally over for Border pacing enthusiasts with the Albury Harness Racing Club holding its season opener at the paceway tonight.

The highlight will be the running of the heats of the Barry McBride Memorial (2150m) with the final to be held next Saturday night.

McBride was a life member of the club.

The winning trainer of the $3000 final will also receive a gig valued at around $2000.

Albury driver Paul Brown looks to have a strong hand in the first heat with the unraced Man Ona Flight mare Ebony Ona Flight.

If the David Jack-trained mare has any ability she should prove hard to catch for her more experienced rivals from barrier 2.

Meanwhile, the dates for the 2009-10 season were released and was Albury granted eight meetings starting tonight and winding up on March 27.

The meetings will be all held on Saturday nights with the exception of the popular New Year’s Eve meeting falling on a Thursday.

Club president Jeff Hogan has been gearing up for what he hopes is another successful year on and off the track.

“Wagga is holding their Carnival Of Cups meeting tomorrow which has unfortunately detracted quite a bit from the nominations for this meeting,” he said.

“This meeting is a bit down but it gives us a chance to get up and running and iron out any bugs after not racing for the past eight months.

“We have got another meeting next week and I would be surprised if the nominations didn’t improve substantially.”

With the club holding three meetings in December and the festive season fast approaching, Hogan is expecting the crowds to flock to the paceway.

“We get an enormous amount of interest from social clubs for the pre-Christmas functions,” he said.

“So with that and our New Year’s Eve racing, which is always very popular, we’re hoping that everyone gets behind us again.”

The first race is at 7.35pm.

THE DATES November 7, 14; December 5, 19, 31; February 6, 20; March 27.
