ALBURY-Wodonga Spitfires coach Ian Beath isn’t expecting miracles against Greensborough in Melbourne tomorrow.
But the team’s leading scorer has commanded another improved showing from his State League One line-up and hopes to better its 5-0 loss earlier in the season.
“We have improved a lot over the past few weeks and that’s our aim again,” Beath said.
“You want to keep going forward.
“The signs have been promising and, even though Greensborough is fifth on the ladder, we are looking forward to taking it up to them.”
The Spitfires’ chance of inflicting an upset have been dealt a double blow with Beath sidelined with pneumonia and Josh Prowse unavailable due to family commitments.
Sam McIntosh, Matt Sawyer and Fergus Dawson will shoulder enormous responsibility.
Beath said the Spitfires were keen to gain momentum with a crucial clash against Altona looming in several weeks which will almost certainly decide who is relegated with Melbourne University.
“That’s the game we are building towards,” Beath said.
“It’s going to be a big one for both sides.”
In the women, the Albury-Wodonga Strikers should come up trumps against Southern United today.
Strikers coach Nanette Latta will take a full strength line-up into the match and is confident of a good result after winning 4-1 in their last meeting.
“We have a fairly settled team at the moment and hopefully we can have a good win,” Latta said.
It will be the team’s last match for several weeks with Shelby Thorneycroft, Jade Versteegen, Emma Knagge, Josephine Plowright, Janessa Leggatt, Allison Nicholson and Sam Campbell having Australian Country Championship commitments.
