WODONGA trainer Liz Aalbers made the most of a rare foray to the city when Edged Out outstayed his rivals in the $30,000 Super Vobis Handicap over 3000m at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Edged Out has been in career-best form with the gelding now winning three of its past four starts.
Edged Out (6.50) took off 600m from home in a race-winning move to score a three-quarter length win over Miss Alia (3.70) with Doosra Diamond (6.50) third a further length away.
Aalbers was confident Edged Out was at peak fitness and could handle the challenging 3000m race.
“The horse has improved out of sight in the past month and is a genuine stayer,” she said.
“I thought if he couldn’t get 3000m in the condition he was, he would never get it. He is a very fit racehorse.”
Aalbers said winning rider Stephen Baster followed riding instructions to perfection.
“I told Stephen you have got to have him rolling, then he gives a sprint and then he just keeps grinding,” she said.
“As it turned out it was a race-winning move because the favourite (Miss Alia) got held up and we were able to pinch a break on them.”
Edged Out is now in the spelling paddock for a three-week break.
The six-year-old gelding is raced by a local syndicate including Aalbers as well as Sue Luck, Alex Maher and David Smith.
