WHILE not at the level of its record years, a strong crowd took advantage of the early morning cool change to head to Corowa Race Club yesterday for the annual Melbourne Cup meeting.
Club president Ian Bilney said the crowd was close to last year’s 3800 with cash gate-takings at $12,956, excluding pre-booked events.
“It’s been good, similar to last year, and we’ve been blessed with the weather which has helped,” Mr Bilney said.
“The fields have been bolstered by a few trainers from Melbourne who have helped out and everyone’s been really well-behaved.”
All the way from Canberra for Greg Haustead, bookmakers Dave Harris, Chris and Tom Glynn said betting was solid but not spectacular.
Yet the event was still worthwhile.
“We came down early yesterday and got some golf in and had dinner at the Royal Hotel, it’s a lovely place to visit and relax a bit,” Mr Glynn said.
“We’ll probably only do $5000 but it’s a great little race meeting and people are having a great time.
“So far we’re a little bit ahead because one of the favourites fell over.”
When asked for a cup tip, Glynn gave a good bookie’s response.
“I always find it hard to pick but I think Alcopop will do well,” he said.
Twenty-five bar staff kept the drinks flowing and the track was dominated by Corowa jockey Shirley Hunter, who won three of the six races.
Corowa singer Bobby Turk, aka Mr T, kept the partygoers dancing until late while the big screen in the bookies ring was a massive hit, the noise on the turn into the home straight nearly bringing down the shed during the Melbourne Cup.
The club produced a good 3 track, with the course not needing any more water after the Caulfield Cup 2? weeks ago due to the spring rains.
