STEWARDS will inspect the rain-bogged Wangaratta racetrack this morning with concerns tomorrow’s 10-race meeting will have to be postponed or transferred.
Racing Victoria steward Peter Ryan will assess the track with interim course curator Brendan Jackson, with a decision to be made later in the day.
If the Wangaratta track is determined unsafe to race on, the meeting may have to be transferred to the well-drained Wodonga track.
Jackson last night said Wangaratta had received 55mm of rain since the weekend, with yesterday’s late showers putting the meeting in jeopardy.
“If you’d asked me (yesterday) morning I would have said I was 100 per cent confident we would be racing,” Jackson said.
“But it’s pretty heavy at the moment and if we get a bit more rain we could be in trouble.”
The Wangaratta track has been a cause of concern for RVL for some time but Jackson, who was appointed as the interim curator by RVL last month, said it was coping well with the wet conditions.
“There’ s not many tracks that can deal with the amount of rain we’ve had,” Jackson said.
“If anything, it handles it better than the tracks down south because it’s not as sand-based, which probably makes it safer to race on.”
A venue switch would be a blow to the Wangaratta Turf Club, with 149 acceptors over 10 races received.
