Exchancellor chases hat-trick

03 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
GIVEN a good performance at Albury today, in-form Exchancellor will be aimed at the Wagga carnival in May.

Prepared by Roger Waters at Wantabadgery, the five-year-old gelding shoots for a hat-trick of wins in the Twin City Truck Centre Class 3 Hcp (1000m).

“If he can win today we’re hoping he can measure up to a better class race during the Wagga carnival,” Waters said.

“The horse has kept improving, especially this preparation where we’re training him different.

“Exchancellor has done good since last start. He’s fine but the biggest problem tomorrow is weight.

“Weight stops trains.”

The son of Exceed And Excell has risen eight ratings points after wins at Gundagai (January 1) and Albury (January 21) and carries 3.5 kilograms extra to 58.5 kilograms from his impressive fast finishing long-neck Albury win in the same class as tomorrow.

Previously trained by Gai Waterhouse, Exchancellor was privately purchased by Waters, his wife Jane and a group of mates.

“The deal was sealed over a couple of beers,” Waters laughed.

Since resuming from a 238-day spell last November, Exchancellor has recorded two placings and two wins from four starts for an overall record of three wins and six placings from 18 starts.

“Last year he always showed he could gallop but every time I had him ready to win a race, he drew bad alleys and kept getting run down near the line,” Waters said.

“We took him to the picnics to win his maiden.

“Last preparation he raced more forward. This time around, we’re allowing him to settle, keep him very fresh and he’s returned four cheques from four starts.

“May it continue.”

Waters described Exchancellor’s Gundagai win as “exceptional” and, with tongue in cheek, suggested the handicapper “obviously saw the merit of his last win,” hence the hefty weight increase.

He added: “Exchancellor is one of the loveliest horses I’ve ever had anything to do with. An absolute gentleman.”

Exchancellor will be ridden by Bryan Murphy.
