Hunter’s cup day luck still kicking

04 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
VETERAN Corowa jockey Shirley Hunter made the first Tuesday in November her own yesterday, scoring another bag of winners on Melbourne Cup day.

Hunter, 43, saluted three times at the Corowa Race Club’s Cup Day meeting, falling just short of her remarkable feats of last year when she scored four winners at the same meeting.

Yesterday, Hunter recorded wins in the second (Chancery Flame), fourth (Amber Sunset) and sixth (Golice) races on the card and was unlucky not to have had a fourth aboard odds-on favourite Insurance in the fifth.

Despite travelling well around the bend, Hunter couldn’t find any room for the Geoff Duryea-trained mare to unleash its final sprint and had to settle for third.

“I was a bit stiff not to get four again — Insurance got boxed in,” Hunter said.

“But I had a good day ... I’m very happy, there’s nothing better than riding winners.

“It’s one of (Corowa’s) best meetings and it’s always a big crowd, so it’s a good day to do good.

“I thought a couple of mine were good chances, especially Mandie Jones’ (Golice), I thought he should win.

“The others I wasn’t as sure ... but it all worked out well.”

Golice, which was trained by hometown horsewoman Jones, was the most impressive of Hunter’s wins, relishing a drop in class to win the $4000 Benchmark 45 Hcp (1300m) by 2 lengths.

“He pulled-up like he could have gone around again, he did it pretty easy,” Hunter said.

“He was down in class ... and we thought it would be a nice canter in the park for him and it worked out to be the case.”

Hunter, whose 2008-09 season was her best since arriving in Corowa three years ago, has enjoyed a good spring having already recently ridden doubles at Jerilderie and Albury last week.

Another veteran enjoying good form is Corowa horseman Richard Freyer who trained six-year-old stayer Amenophis ($2.10) to victory in the $4000 Benchmark 60 Hcp (2100m).

Odds-favourite Qaurton ($1.80) could only manage third in his bid for a fourth consecutive SDRA victory since arriving at Wangaratta from Tasmania.

Later in the day, Benalla apprentice Jake Duffy passed his 4kg claim by guiding veteran gelding Our Marauding to his first win in close to 18 months.
