Leica Larrikin set for Bobbie Lewis

02 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
COROWA galloper Leica Larrikin’s final hit-out before tackling the Epsom Hcp will be in the group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.

The Border’s biggest hope for spring carnival success was also entered in Saturday’s group 2 $400,000 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

But the Freyer stable yesterday confirmed the shorter $200,000 Bobbie Lewis would be Leica Larrikin’s last run before chasing his first group 1 success in the Epsom on October 2 at Randwick.

“The Makybe Diva was never a serious consideration, we just entered him as a back-up really,” Freyer said.

“I think it would be very unlikely that he races again after this weekend before the Epsom.

“He’s coming along very nicely.”

Matthew Cahill will retain the ride aboard Leica Larrikin.

Exciting Sydney mare Love Conquers All and promising Lee Freedman-trained mare Wealth Princess are also Bobbie Lewis nominations.

Leica Larrikin was yesterday a $26 chance for the $350,000 Epsom Hcp, behind Cox Plate-bound mare More Joyous and last year’s group 1 Manikato Stakes winner Danleigh.

If all goes well at Randwick, Leica Larrikin has been earmarked to tackle the $1 million Emirates Stakes on the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Meanwhile, the Border’s other spring carnival hopeful, Wodonga gelding Berringama, has returned to work.

Trainer Brian Cox put the promising five-year-old’s campaign on hold after a below-par performance on a slow track behind improving stayer Mourdre at Caulfield four weeks ago.

“It would seem he doesn’t like the wet tracks so we put him away for the rain,” Cox said.

“He’s back in work now.”

Cox said Berringama’s next run would be in Melbourne but was yet to decide which race.
