PINT-sized jockey Jake Bayliss may just be 145 centimetres and weigh 38 kilograms but he hasn’t taken long to make his presence felt.
Bayliss, 17, enjoyed a dream first day at the races at Werribee last Thursday when he notched his first winner at just his second ride aboard the Mick Kent-trained You Think So.
The teenage apprentice is the son of former Queensland jockey Jamie Bayliss and has since joined the Wodonga stables of David O’Prey on loan from Kent for a short stint on the Border.
“I have always dreamt of becoming of a jockey and to get my first winner so early was incredible,” Bayliss said.
“My mum flew down from Queensland which made it even that bit more special.
“I plan to be at Dave’s stables for about three months and get as many rides as possible.
“There is a lot of meetings around this area and I just want to experience as much race riding as I can before heading back to Melbourne.
“I have got five rides at Wodonga on Saturday so I’m really looking forward to that.”
While the majority jockeys are on a constant diet, counting calories stringently and monitoring every morsel of food, Bayliss can eat like a horse and still not gain weight.
Pizza and KFC are regular fare for the jockey who has weighed the same since turning a teenager.
“Lets just say I’m a non-restricted diet,” Bayliss said.
