Rawiller to launch Gold Cup Carnival

03 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
SYDNEY’S premier jockey Nash Rawiller will be a special guest of the Albury Racing Club on Friday, March 2, to officially launch the Albury Gold Cup Carnival.

Rawiller will be the guest speaker at the club’s Business and Barrels Luncheon which is held at the Commercial Club.

The multiple group 1 winner is yet to commit to riding in the $170,000 cup which has been upgraded to listed status for the first time this year.

But club officials are hopeful Rawiller can secure a suitable mount to entice him to ride in country NSW’s richest race.

“Nash is Sydney’s premier and most respected jockey at the moment so it’s pretty exciting to secure him as early as we have for the launch,” club chief John Miller said yesterday.

“It’s a huge coup for the club with Nash committing and gives locals a chance to meet another high profile jockey and gives the cup and carnival a real boost.

“By all accounts Nash is keen to ride and hopefully he will be back on Albury Gold Cup day.

“He obviously has to find a suitable ride first but I’m pretty hopeful he’ll be here on the day.

“We have to be realistic and know the race is on in the middle of the Sydney Carnival and that is obviously his priority.

“But we have been blessed in recent years that the jockey who has been at the launch has come back for the meeting to ride and hopefully that trend continues.”

Rawiller has ridden more than 1200 winners including 35 group 1 winners and is the number one jockey for the Gai Waterhouse stable.

The two-day carnival starts on March 22 with the $170,000 Albury Gold Cup (2000m) the following day and will offer a record $745,800 in prizemoney, trophies and available bonuses over the carnival.
