A HOWLONG team has won the Albury and District Bowling Association’s fours championship.
The team of Gordon Midson, Steve Kirk, Wally Bourne and skip Norm Honey was successful in the final played at Henty on Sunday afternoon.
Honey’s team had a 19-14 success against the North Albury rink of Mark Tait, Alan Ross, Conan Trainor and skip Noel Trainor.
The victory was set up by Honey’s rink getting a good start.
They were leading 12-0 after six ends with Kirk in superb touch and repeatedly trailing the jack.
But the North Albury combination came back although the margin proved too much.
They were holding shots on ends towards the finish, but Honey cut them back with adept touch.
Trainor needed six shots on the final end to draw level.
He tried to kill the end so it would be replayed, but was only successful in getting one shot.
Earlier Honey’s rink had a 25-10 semi-final win against the North Albury team of Lloyd Ronan, Merv Curphy, Stewie Ronan and skip Col Dwyer.
In the other semi-final, Trainor won 26-12 against Howlong’s Phil Slater, Allan Pantling, Adrian Pantling and skip Chris Kennedy.
The victory enables Honey’s team to qualify for the Zone 8 (Riverina) play-offs later this year.
- The Albury and District Bowling Association’s pennant season starts on Saturday.
There is a composite competition for six teams in grades one, two and three.
North Albury is in grade one after winning the Zone 8 grade two pennant title last year and Henty is graded two.
Four other teams — Commercial Club, Holbrook, Culcairn and Howlong — are graded in three.
All the teams play against each other with North Albury having to finish on top of the points tally to make zone play-offs this season.
Henty has to finish second and the other teams are vying for the grade three title.
There are six teams in grades 4, 5 and 6, with eight teams in grade 7.
Ten rounds will be played and the semi-finals are scheduled for March 31.
The district’s half-yearly meeting will be at Culcairn on Sunday at 1pm.
