Bill Davison (Corowa Services), Mick McDermott, Paul Carey and Ashley Bates (Wodonga) and Maurie Braden, Trevor Sellwood, Rob Mitchell and Ian Brimblecombe (Wangaratta) all won their first round games in their respective events.

But they were all beaten in quarter-finals by some classy opposition.

Davison had a thrilling 25-23 victory against Murray-Mallee representative David Kelly in the opening round of the singles on Saturday morning.

On the last two ends, Davison moved the jack to win the ends and close out the game.

He was in fine touch in his quarter-final against state representative Nathan Bush (Geelong West) to establish a break.

But Bush got the mat, opted for short ends just over the minimum length and drew away to win.

He made the final against state representative Lee Schraner (Brighton) but lost.

Brimblecombe’s rink won its first game against a Barooga Sports Club team skipped by Geoff Mitchell.

They then played a team from Camperdown Golf skipped by Paul Cameron and made a disastrous start being down 14-1 before eventually losing 19-8.

The fours championship was won by Essendon’s Peter Loe, Jarrod Burt, Anthony Flapper and skip Matt Flapper.

McDermott, Carey and Bates won their first game 20-11 against a Horsham City team.

They lost the quarter-final to eventual winners Torie Babitsch, Nathan Wilson and skip Mathew Wilson (Bendigo).

Frank Seaton (Corowa Services) was beaten 25-16 by Schraner in the first round of the champion of champion singles.

Schraner etched his name in the history books by winning the final against state skip Wayne Roberts (Yarraville-Footscray) 25-23.

He became only the second bowler of the modern era to win the state singles and champion of champions titles in the same season.

And he joined his idol, Bob Middleton, as the only three-time winners of the champion of champions.

Corowa Services father and son combination Ken and Scott Widdison played in the pairs yesterday.

They won their first game to make the quarter- finals.
