BEECHWORTH teenager Mason Bayliss is the new under-25 singles champion for the Ovens and Murray region.
Bayliss, 16, produced some superb draw bowling on the free-flowing Wodonga greens.
He defeated Wodonga’s Josh Rudd 25-23 in a semi-final which was a particularly high standard.
Bayliss led early, but Rudd knuckled down and fought back with his ability to convert shots keeping him in the game.
It was a tight finish, but Bayliss had a sufficient break to sneak home.
In the final, Bayliss faced another Wodonga challenger, Jason King, and it was a similar story.
The outstanding touch of Bayliss with his draw bowling enabled him to lead 13-4 after 11 ends.
It was from that point a game of draw shots and well-weighted conversions which kept the many spectators enthralled.
King got to within six shots late in the game.
But Bayliss continually managed to draw a telling bowl within 30 centimetres of the jack and finally won 25-19.
