Triples title secured in runaway win

26 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
A COMMERCIAL Club team has won the Albury and District Bowling Association’s triples championship.

John McDonnell, Graeme Kilner and skip David Barnes had a runaway victory against a Walla team in the final at Howlong on Sunday.

Earlier they had a 26-17 semi-final victory against the home team of Allan Pantling, Norm Honey and Adrian Pantling.

The other semi-final was won by Walla’s Feargal O’hearcian, Lee Churches and skip Barry Carey.

They defeated the Commercial Club team of Tony Heriot, George Lee and Paul Davies 24-17.

The victory was set up by the Walla combination winning seven of the first eight ends for an 11-3 lead.

But Davies’ team came back to square the game at 14-all after 16 ends.

Carey’s team claimed six shots on the next three ends to set up a handy break and maintained a buffer with the game called off after 24 ends with one end remaining.

The Howlong team led for much of the early part of the game and Barnes trailed 12-7 after 14 ends.

But his team managed to get 10 shots on the next three ends, including five shots on the 16th end.

Another five shots on the 20th end provided a 22-16 lead and Barnes maintained a handy break with the game called off one end short.

The final was dominated by Barnes’ team from the outset with four shots on the first end.

After getting five shots on the fifth end, he was leading 12-2 and the Walla team was unable to recover.

The margin was 33-14 after 22 ends with the winners qualifying for Zone 8 (Riverina) play-offs.

- Club officials and pennant players are irate about no scores and ladders from the first two rounds of pennant appearing in The Border Mail.

They are asking what has caused the breakdown.

The onus rests with the association to provide the scores in an acceptable format and so far that has not happened.

Some clubs have exacerbated the situation by failing to provide scores which affect the ladders.

But club officials seeking answers over scores failing to appear should contact the association.
