Mills thrills in sedan final

13 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
COROWA driver Trevor Mills was the big winner at the Wangaratta Speedway’s first meeting for the year last Saturday night.

In front of a good crowd of spectators on a perfect night for racing, Mills fought neck-and-neck with Bob Bailey in the Wangaratta 1000 for production sedans.

The 25-lap final was a close affair, but Mills prevailed after Bailey’s car struck mechanical problems.

Many of the finalists also dropped out during the final, leaving Rosedale’s Steven Laidlaw to finish third.

Mills’ win made it three in a row for the Mills family in the annual feature race, following up his last win and a win for the youngest member of the team Jake who started the streak.

Experienced Wangaratta driver Bob Jarred drove his Holden Commodore to victory in the standard saloons category.

Fellow Wangaratta driver, Robert Nicholas, was second, with Corowa’s Paul Barkman taking the final podium place.

Drivers from Alexandra dominated the Vic Sports Sedan category as they fine-tuned their cars ahead of the state title in Wangaratta on February 25.

Matt Ridd, Luke Fallon and Matt Nelson showed the locals how it should be done, taking a clean sweep of the top placings.

Close racing was a feature of the junior competition all evening, before Mt Beauty’s Cooper Cappalleri took the chequered flag as the top points scorer.

Ricky Jarred finished in second place, while Geelong’s Brodi Montague showed plenty of potential in third.

Shepparton’s Danny Stainer was once again the man to catch in the Compact Speedcar category, proving too strong for Matt Astrella and Brad Day after a closely fought battle.

The Wangaratta Motor Sports Club’s next race meeting will be held on February 4, with races for Compact Speedcars, Standard Saloons, Juniors, Vic Sports Sedans, Goulburn Ovens Sedans, motorcycles and sidecars.

But hostilities continue before then as Production Sedan racing returns to Wahgunyah Speedway next Saturday night (January 21) when Mills Racing, Bailey and company will be at it again.

- THE Antique Car Club Albury-Wodonga advises club members that the incorrect information was printed in the last edition of Cough & Splutter re the date of the Corowa Federation parade.

The parade will take place on Sunday, January 29, not Sunday, January 22, as printed.

Members are to assemble at the Albury Private Hospital in Pemberton Street for a 9.30am departure.

Rally director is Robert Rennick phone 0409 110 063.
