WHEN Liz O’Connor started playing in the first ladies’ squash competition at the Commercial Club, she, and her opponents, would strike the ball with a simple wooden racquet.
Fast-forward 30 years, and O’Connor is still gracing the squash court, but now she utilises some of the sport’s more modern equipment, including metal racquets.
Later this month, O’Connor will help celebrate 30 years of the Commercial Club’s ladies’ squash competition.
The competition began in June, 1979 after a meeting between a group of ladies who wanted to play squash at the Commercial Club.
The competition began two months later on a Wednesday night and three decades on it is still running.
Since 1979, two Wednesday night competitions have run annually, with some summer events also held.
On Friday, the women associated with the competition will celebrate the 30th anniversary with a reunion at the Commercial Club.
The night will begin at 6.30pm, with drinks, dinner and entertainment.
The cost is $26.50 and anyone interested in attending can contact Angela Lee on (02) 6023 5553 or Carolyn Takle 0412 629 753.
RSVP by Wednesday.
