RUTHERGLEN’S Don Chambers was driving home from Adelaide yesterday with a boot full of gold, silver and bronze.
The evergreen athlete was returning from the Australian Masters championships where he collected another extraordinary haul of medals.
Competing in the 70-74 age group, his best result came in the 80m hurdles where he won gold in a record time of 14.19 seconds — a whole second faster than the old record.
He also claimed gold in the 300m hurdles and silvers in the shot put, field pentathlon (long jump, discus, javelin, 200m and 1500m) and triple jump.
On top of that, Chambers, 72, also won two bronze medals.
Chambers was particularly pleased with the diversity of his results as he prepares to compete in the decathlon (10 disciplines) at the World Masters in Finland at the start of August.
“It bodes well that I have got good results in a variety of events ... I’m very pleased,” Chambers said.
The former Indigo mayor’s latest haul comes just three weeks after cleaning up at the Victorian Masters in the Wodonga colours.
There he collected medals in each of his 16 events.
Chambers won a further 10 gold medals at the New Zealand Masters championships earlier in March, breaking records in the 100m, 200m 80m hurdles and long jump.
