Indigenous youngsters head to Wagga

23 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
SOME of the most promising young Aboriginal sports people in NSW will gain further expert tuition at Wagga’s Southern Sports Academy this weekend.

The academy will host ists second talented indigenous athlete camp this weekend, which will involve up to 20 athletes who are scholarship holders with a regional academy of sport in NSW.

Academy executive director Greg McLay said the academy was won the right to host the camp on the back of its track record of developing young athletes in southern NSW and because of its reputation of having access to some of the best sports consultants in the state.

“We are fortunate that we have access to such high-quality presenters in our local region and we believe the athletes attending will gain enormous benefit from their expertise,” he said.

The program includes:

- Workshops with local indigenous elders and community leaders focusing on cultural identity, self-esteem and respect;

- Culturally significant workshops and tours with representatives of the National Parks and Wildlife Service;

- A workshop with AIS track and field athlete scholarship holder Robbie Crowther, which will focus on leadership and the expectations and responsibilities of a role model;

- Mental skills workshops with sport psychology consultant Michael Kruger-Davis that will include goal setting, coping skills and performing at ones best;

- A workshop with sports science consultant Danny Freemantle, focusing on making healthy choices in relation to nutrition and lifestyle; and,

- Activities with Borambola Sport and Recreation staff looking at the importance of taking responsibility, setting goals and priorities, teamwork and effective communication.

The camp will run from Friday to Sunday at the Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre.
